So our needs are low. > What kind of prize support and promotional material would you like to see for V:TES?: My play group wants cards, cards, cards. The more they can get for less money the better. For the older players who have the cards they need/want to build the decks that come to mind then a prize pack of original art / white wolf gear is fine. But for newer players it's all about the cards. Maybe a participation pack (20-30 cards) with a set of preselected commons and one random rare. Things like 5 Minion Tap, 5 Blood Dolls, 5 Wakes, etc. Cards that are a basis to most decks that aren't easily attainable in quantity with the new sets. > What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: I would love to have more crypt card types. I like the idea of the hunters, but I would also love to have a full crypt of werewoleves with supporting library cards. Make then group 99 so they can't be used with vampires. > What would you like to see in future storyline events for V:TES?: I have only participated in the Reverend Adams storyline and it was interesting but it never grabbed my attention because I haven't gotten into the written works from White Wolf. I found the World of Darkness from V:TES. I would to love to be able to pick up a novel / set of short stories that coincided with a story line event that is upcoming or has concluded. Better yet a precursor book then an aftermath book that tied in the winning decks and tactics. > Any further comments?: I have only been around for about two years and I am loving it. David and Robyn Tatu are a great boon to the V:TES community and without the Atlanta playgroup, I don't think my group would still be playing. --------- >Your Name: Fred Scott >Your City/Domain: Phoenix, AZ >How many players are in your playgroup? Three players attended besides myself. >Average attendance?: N/A >Where do you run tournaments?: When I can run them, at a games store. >Are you interested in hosting a Qualfier?: If it were possible to attract an appropriate number of players, I'd be happy to run one. As things stand, that seems unlikely. >Are you interested in hosting a North American Championship?: No. >How often does your group travel to other groups to play V:TES?: I personally travel 2-4 times a year (not counting to Tucson, which was about twice more a year; they haven't been active for over a year). On very rare occasions, one other person travels with me. >How far does your group travel to other groups to play V:TES?: 400 miles. >Does your local game store carry V:TES?: One store in Phoenix carries V:TES. >What has been your best source for new players or method for getting new >players?: People finding me as a prince through the White Wolf website, joining our Yahoogroups list, or being referred to me by games store personnel where we hold tournaments. >What problems has your group faced in the past few years? Lack of new players to replace the ones who move away or lose interest in the game. Too few players makes it difficult to hold regular games which, in turn, makes it more difficult to stir up new interest. Also, the lack of a prince who could spend more time organizing and recruiting. >What kind of assistance would you like to see from White >Wolf to help you support V:TES?: I think the existing support is realistically close to as good as it could be with maybe one exception: web support for the game needs to function properly and get fixed promptly were it doesn't. I think malfunctioning web support, player database problems, and lack of needed upgrading of some the web pages in the past have sporadically hurt the player organization. >What kind of prize support and promotional material would you >like to see for V:TES?: I like the existing promo and storyline packages with the possible exception of the some of the "special" promos in the past which players in less populated places/further away from the "action" had a great deal of trouble getting. I don't think distributing promos that are excessively difficult for casual players to get helps anything and potentially causes animosity. But White Wolf seems to be moving away from them lately and they were only my only real complaint about the prize support. I don't think prize support is that important in the long run, frankly. >What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: Kindred of the East. Maybe more expanding out into non-Vampire expansions like Garou or mages, etcs. - but better playtested than Nights of Reckoning and involving larger expansions. >What would you like to see in future storyline events for V:TES?: Storylines which use less radical devices than the Rev. Adams and Nergal storyline decks. Small variations in the game - about the degree of the 75%-same-clan rule - are OK. I'd like to see more emphasis placed on winning tournaments for your favorite clan but I can't think of a reasonable suggestion for how to do that myself. >Any further comments?: The game probably needs a "virtual world" place to go play against opponents in other parts of the real world. Like a Second Life VtES play parlour or something which does the virtual world equivalent of JOL. If people in the smaller areas could play the game virtually in real time as effectively (or nearly as effectively) as they can play it in person, that would go a long ways towards countering the cycle of disinterest which sets in when an area ceases to support regular games due to lack of players. --------------- Your Name: Ian Lee Your City/Domain: San Jose, CA (oh, how I lament not going with Silicon Valley, which is more accurate and much cooler) is my Domain, but in reality, even before being a Prince, I've been managing affairs for the San Francisco Bay Area. How many players are in your playgroup? (how many active? how many inactive?): We just lost our Yahoogroup which had 70+ members, though some weren't really part of the local playgroup (Xian, Fred Scott, Duffin, LSJ, etc.) and some weren't ever going to play again. So far, the new group has under 20 as we are still rebuilding the member list. Of the old list, I'd say at most 40 were possible players and 20 might be considered active with a few more people offlist, so maybe 25 [barely to somewhat to moderately] active. Does your group have a website? (if so, please list): Used to. Got no attention after a while so we let it die. Does your group have a mailing list? (if so, please list): Yes, currently BAvtes@yahoogroups.com after sfbayarea-vtes@yahoogroups.com mysteriously went poof about 10 days ago, though both lists have been private to keep some level of control over them. How often does your group play V:TES?: In the Bay Area, there's one weekly game. They draw on about 10 people max. I, personally, play very inconsistently due to not having a regular South Bay game. Used to have a weekly San Jose game for 5 years or whatever. Now, we talk about something regular but struggle to make it happen. Where do you play?: Regular game is in Berkeley. San Francisco can't get enough people, South Bay is random, maybe 3-4 weeks apart, lower East Bay blew up a long time ago, Peninsula was only briefly consistent before becoming nonexistent again. How many players show up when you play?: When I play? 3-7 for casual play. Berkeley seems to get 4-6 when they don't cancel. How many tournaments did you run in the past year? Average attendance?: I'm not entirely sure. I was out of the country for 4 months, and the events were at conventions where other stuff was going on. It must have been at least two, though I don't think any of them were standard constructed (LotN Release, something for Sword of Caine, I think). More people show up when someone else runs events to where I only try to organize when no one else is plausible, like at conventions. Where do you run tournaments?: I run them at conventions these days mostly. Ira runs ones in Berkeley. Are you interested in hosting a Qualfier?: Ira is. I missed last year's (the first time we ever had one in NoCal) when I was out of the country. I'm not sure when he's thinking of running one this year. Are you interested in hosting a North American Championship?: I don't see the point. The local playerbase is rather apathetic; LA is the more relevant place in our state, nevermind our region; West Coast isn't a particularly good place to hold a lot of gaming stuff. How often does your group travel to other groups to play V:TES?: Very little. Very, very little. When I showed up at the NAC, people associated me with the Vegas group since I was staying with them, so my running joke was that I repped for Vegas West ... yet, I'm the one who consistently goes to Gen Con (but only plays outside of the normal gaming hours), the one who used to go to Gen Con SoCal, the one who hooks up with the Maryland/DC/Virginia crowd when visiting family, who hooked up with the Sydney players when I visited my brother in Australia last May. We can't even be bothered to go to SoCal most of the time. Pretty much only when people (such as Kuta) are visiting family or as a one time deal (Brad Nozik, the original Prince of SF going to Gen Con one year) or people who were already travellers before getting here, like Ira, do they ever play elsewhere. How far does your group travel to other groups to play V:TES?: Entirely dependent upon why the person is there, usually due to family visits, and has no real connection to distance (within the US - I'm not aware of virtually any international travel). Does your local game store carry V:TES?: Some do. Eudemonia in Berkeley does. I think Gator Games in San Mateo where I used to occasionally do stuff stopped. What has been your best source for new players or method for getting new players?: Oddly, probably the White Wolf forum where someone will ask about Bay Area play and someone will tell the person to contact me. We haven't gotten anybody from a convention to be a regular in ages. Don't think the store play is doing much to expand the playerbase. What problems has your group faced in the past few years?: Getting older, having more responsibilities in general. General lack of enthusiasm - the less people play, the less they care about playing, even in my case. I don't know if it's a problem, but the game getting harder and harder to grok, not just with new mechanics but the endless text on so many cards, likely doesn't excite people. What kind of assistance would you like to see from White Wolf to help you support V:TES?: I'm not sure what's useful. My sense of playing CCGs in the area since '95 is that NoCal has a rather casual view of CCGs relative to other places. We have never taken advantage of such things as a build your own storyline, which is, at least theoretically, extremely player friendly. It would be interesting to have WW rep at local cons or stores to give some gravitas to events, but the reality is that when things click we can get decent turnouts to tournaments. We could use more people locally who are into demoing, marketing, and whatnot. I'm too burnt out on trying to build playerbases for those sorts of functions, but other than compensating volunteers or sending people out to do this sort of thing, I don't know how WW influences us to where we do more of that. What kind of prize support and promotional material would you like to see for V:TES?: IMO, unique promos are anathema. Maybe it's how much I played Babylon 5, but I just despise unique promos. I tried to champion for alternate art, et al promos ages ago on the dead Prince list and it got no more traction than your attempts seem to have gotten. After 10th came out, I thought it would be great to do foils. Personally, I think the look of the cards is pretty awful and think little of most of the artwork. The red, foil 10 looks neat and foils don't screw up balance like unique promos do. Now, foil promos may be fine without doing foils in packs. I liked the concept of collectible counters and edges, but after they were done, they become so ubiquitous that it fell flat in my eyes. My most useful prize for any CCG ever was a cloth playmat. Khalsa-Brain was a company that used to do decent playmats and they did ones for more obscure stuff. Japji is still around, but I'm sure that company isn't. Paper playmats are awful. There must be some sort of accessory that works well. Sleeves are probably not good prizes as some people don't even use them. Anarch/Corruption cards were okay. It might be interesting to run with the idea of useful "tokens" - Black Hand, Diseased, etc. - though there's the problem of just not being that useful often enough. Free boosters are okay. Personally, there's only one prize that interests me in standard constructed events anymore as I prebuy all the cards I need and promos are either easy to get or too much effort and that's the TWDA, but I'm sure this doesn't hold for most people around here as a small number of people have won so many of the local tournaments that most people don't think in terms of tournament wins. Storyline wins are interesting to people, kind of, sort of. Except, there's little payoff, and some of us are bewildered as to why anyone would want the power clans to win, while clans that could use help have no real viable chance. What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: Expansion of group 1, if nothing else, at least advanced versions of the junk group 1ers. More Laibon. More multidiscipline cards for odd discipline combinations. General eye towards helping out things that suck, whether they be clans, disciplines, or whatever. Developing the underdeveloped (besides just Laibon), e.g. giving some [useful] clan cards to clans that don't have much in the way of [useful] clan cards. Some innovative ideas that don't just add more mechanics to the game, e.g. a political action that can be discarded for a combat effect. A lack of hosers. A lack of Dominate powercards. Real shifts in the power balance in the game. Vampires who are more special ability driven. Nakhthorheb would be vaguely in that direction. The extreme would be something like a 10 cap with no disciplines but a host of positive text - title, power abilities like extra master or +1 [or 2] stealth, etc. A good disciplineless bounce card. I've always wanted billions of things in CCGs I played, so given more time, I'm sure I could remember the 50 odd other things I may or may not care about anymore. What would you like to see in future storyline events for V:TES?: First, would just like to see them since they generate more enthusiasm than normal events. I like alternate rules but not that thrilled with additional decks; I really liked building decks for the Gehenna league, though the rules were painful to play with. I'd like to see more meaningful results from the events. V:TES carries the banner for oWoD, yet the storylines don't really seem to be trying to maintain it by having anything recognizable occurring. Any further comments?: Is there Prince discussion anywhere, anymore? I tried the DC Princes and they didn't seem to be aware of anything and the last time Oscar said anything to me (months and months ago), he said he was working on something. Anyway, the reality is that niche CCGs need to constantly market themselves, but they need people who will do it and the people I know barely have time to play, let alone try to get anyone else to. I can see where it's hard to give out rewards that are cost effective; the days of 24 boosters from WW for every event are not likely to recur. And, very special rewards like plane trips and getting on cards seem to be difficult to disperse widely enough among the players. While, WW has already given us tools we don't even use. So, I don't really know what's best. What a competitive playerbase and what a playerbase like ours would want aren't likely to be similar, either. Maybe there's some way to find the enthusiastic volunteers who can do what I used to do for a number of CCGs for over 10 years. I'm not exactly sure what that is in today's market. I just know that I'm so tired, so tired of the crusades to balance games, for better playtesting, for getting people to show up, for trying to explain complexities to people who aren't really that interested in the first place. Back in the day, I'd be all fired up about all of the problems I see and how I thought I had ideas for making everything better; now, I just try to keep interested and can't even keep in my head what I think as it all runs together. --------------------- Your Name: Kai Doll Your City/Domain: Seattle, Washington, USA How many players are in your playgroup? 20 (how many active? 6-10 how many inactive?)10-20 Does your group have a website? I listed myself as the Prince of San Francisco because I believe that the Prince list is primarily used by out of town people to get in touch with local people. Since I'm responsive and can put visitors in touch with whoever is most appropriate (often myself), I listed San Francisco, CA. There hasn't been any rules governing what Princes can be where, and I know this from practical experience since I was Prince of Fairdealing, MO for a while, just for the humor value. Running tournaments and having weekly games to give the new players a chance to see the game in action a bit more. Also, a good source of "new" players are old players, who have been inactive for a long time. > What problems has your group faced in the past few years? The bay area is theoretically one location, but we're spread out as far as 2 hours. Sometimes hard to get a regular weekly game. Some game stores aren't as enthusiastic about VTES as other CCGs. We recently had our longstanding yahoogroup magically deleted by Yahoo. I have no idea why! > What kind of assistance would you like to see from White > Wolf to help you support V:TES?: I'd like more insight into the process for making tournament rule changes and qualifying rule changes. Mostly I'd like better information flow to the princes. Empowering the National Coordinate to gain information and then disseminate it seems like a great plan to me. I trust that the National Coordinator has the best interest of the players and the Princes in mind. As long as the National Coordinator is empower, I, as an individual Prince, will be able to turn to him and get what I need (which will probably simply be information, and nothing physical.) > What kind of prize support and promotional material > would you like to see for V:TES?: Boosters are great. Storylines are fun - the gehenna storyline was one of my favorite VTES experiences of all time (other than making the finals of the NAC 2007.) We often have trouble getting tournament kits to the store, and I'm not sure if that's because the store is incompetent (I don't think so), or something is wrong with the supply chain. > What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: Empower LSJ. Princes need not be game designers. LSJ is awesome. > What would you like to see in future storyline events for V:TES?: Something like Gehenna was fun. The best part about storylines, IMO, is the discovery of the unknown. "Ooh, I wonder what's in the Nergal deck?" Even if I get the pleasure of that discovery sitting at my computer reading spoilers, or seeing the deck in action, that's the best part of storylines to me. So I'd encourage any storyline to include unknown elements that are discovered at the time of the event. > Any further comments?: Ben Peal is the best National Coordinator I've known. Simply the fact that he's sending this e-mail, and I'm aware of his existence and passion for the game, is a great quality. I don't know the rules for how National Coordinator gets elected (appointed?), how long the term is, what the responsibilities are, etc. I think Ben is doing a great job, but having more information flow would be great. ------------- > Your Name: Tom Duncan (Wookie813, veknpontiac @yahoo.com) > Your City/Domain: Pontiac, MI > How many players are in your playgroup? 15 or so (how many active? how many inactive?): 9 good and active, rest sporadic to inactive, though I share them now with Flint. I'm planning some demo nights as well. > What problems has your group faced in the past few years? Beyond weather and travel, the problem is cards. A new player has NO CHANCE without spending thousands of dollars on cards in a constructed tournament. The Starter League was created to help this problem. Average attendance?: We haven’t run any tournaments yet, working on a story tournament, basically there are many learning and others who aren’t particularly competitive and just like the game a lot. Some of our members had bad experiences at tourneys. Where do you run tournaments?: If we do, same place we play at. Are you interested in hosting a Qualifier?: We would be, as we also have pretty much the only gaming convention in NW Ohio here in Toledo, BASHCon. Are you interested in hosting a North American Championship?: It would be rough, but sure actually. How often does your group travel to other groups to play V:TES?: We typically don’t, but some of us play at some of the bigger cons like Origins. How far does your group travel to other groups to play V:TES?:We typically don’t, but some members live in surrounding suburbs. Does your local game store carry V:TES?: yes, and Ernie special orders for us all the time. What has been your best source for new players or method for getting new players?: So far word of mouth really. No other people play too much. What problems has your group faced in the past few years?: The biggest problem we have faced overall has been a complete lack of any kind of support from WW. Some of our players went to a tourney at Origins. They were given new VEKN number even thought they already had one and one of our players was told he would be Prince and received a few things to help promote. Him being Prince and support from WW never materialized. I am also a member of the Camarilla, and there are a lot of people there who like to play and have cards and such. I applied to be Prince because this member no longer cared, and I got an almost immediate response with promise of support and such to help promote the game here. Again, I have seen really nothing at all from WW and even trying to order prize packs has been a hassle. So we have basically just gone back to playing for fun and fellowship. There is potential for growth here, but so far I and my players have been completely ignored. What kind of assistance would you like to see from White Wolf to help you support V:TES?: Any would be good. What kind of prize support and promotional material would you like to see for V:TES?: Again, any would be a start. What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: Useable Crypt cards What would you like to see in future storyline events for V:TES?: Anyone would be good, seeing as there hasn’t been one in quite a long time. Any further comments?: I like being Prince, and I like playing the game a lot. So do my players. I like to promote and run tourneys and such, but there so far has been absolutely no support and I don’t even really know how to post to the Prince list of anywhere else for that matter. It was mostly like I got a pat on the head then shuffled off into nothingness. Now that the Super Bowl is over, our core players are looking to start back up, and I have been wanting to expand a lot, but again lack of support or recognition that we exist is tough. Also the prevailing attitude at most of the tourneys our members have gone to seems to be a few guys basically ganging up on anybody new and helping each other win the tourney, so new players get a bad taste in their mouth and don’t want to do tourneys. Another reason we haven’t done one. A response of some sort would be appreciated. ---------- Your Name: R. Are you interested in hosting a North American Championship?: Nope, the town would 'splode with that many people... How far does your group travel to other groups to play V:TES? Europe. Does your local game store carry V:TES?: No local game store anymore. :-( I have to travel 45-60 minutes by car to Meriden, CT to buy VTES off the shelf. Local stores which do carry CCGs are FYE, Target and Wal-Mart. What has been your best source for new players or method for getting new players? This town has confounded all my efforts at establishing a playgroup, and I kinda know what to do in that department. The biggest spike in local interest I had was when a Barnes and Noble 20 minutes away stocked the VTES Player Starter Kit. Being able to point to a 'big box' store which had even that was what convinced the most people that VTES wasn't 'fly by night'. (As a last resort, I have had two children, and am awaiting their growth into VTES players so as have my own captive player base. I expect WW to contribute to their college aducations, as I really only did this for VTES's sake. ;-) What problems has your group faced in the past few years? Getting established. Its tough now that there is no local place from which to buy product. It would kick ass if VTES would be distributed through FYE, with starters, and boosters on blister cards. What? A guy can dream, and its not like there are as many FYE's as there are Wal-Mart... What kind of assistance would you like to see from White Wolf to help you support V:TES?: I don't know that in my situation there is anything for WW to do, other than expand distribution outside of the indie hobby game/comic shop. I demo with my existing stock when I can at the two local colleges, but they're both 'commuter' colleges, with few people interested in recreational activities of any sort. Local gamers are only interested in the mainstream hobby products (D&D, MtG, YuGiOh, Naruto CCG), and there isn't even a White Wolf RPG presence here to draw off of. What kind of prize support and promotional material would you like to see for V:TES?: I think for my situation, having inexpensive/free demo pre-cons and demo mats is important, although I've been working off of my stock of early demo decks for some time now, supplemented by telling interested players to get that Kit through Barnes and Noble.. What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: Mute Daughters of Cacophony. ;-) Dude, I honestly don't care. Scott does a good job with maintaining balance, and thats really all i care about. Maybe a string of 'By Night' themes 60 card mini sets? I'm not adverse, either, to having other non-vampiric crypt cards, although I'm sure that would stir up the purists, so its probably not a great idea... What would you like to see in future storyline events for V:TES?: An element of online play having a bearing on the storyline outcome. I think this is the 'prime' place to allow the VTES online gaming community some say in what happens, as the results aren't sanctioned in any way... Coaxing people into 'WTES' for a storyline would be a great way of bringing attention to that medium for play (and it would get me online to play)... > Any further comments?: Uhh, my further comment is I hate 'further comments' sections. I always feel like I need to come up with something insightful or clever to put in here. What problems has your group faced in the past few years? Store support (low on totem pole). What kind of assistance would you like to see from White Wolf to help you support V:TES?: If nearby prince(s) can coordinate to make larger tournament, prize support (or better yet White Wolf attendance) What kind of prize support and promotional material would you like to see for V:TES?: Prize support is fine (promos, vtes counters). If a different kind prize support wants to be done, you can always do hard to get cards. A simple survey will tell you what are the best/rarest cards of each set (although you probably already know that). For promotional purposes: See further comments. What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: Despite Vampire the Eternal Struggle role-playing game is "done", VTES the card game does a good job making references to it. That would be nice to continue. It a huge source of info for card ideas. Inconnu. Arcanum. Dark Ages cults and references. You get the idea. Specifically, I know that Anarchs and Camarilla are hopefully coming with new stuff. I hope that those two sets don't jump to Group 5, group 4 is still lacking in Camarilla stuff. Oh, and new Abombwe cards. I don't always play them myself, but it has always seemed to me to be a non-bloodline discipline (it has a master card :) ) and should be fleshed out some. Reference to Advanced Vampires: I understand why bloodlines don't have merged vampires really (except Baali), but why doesn't Ravnos? What would you like to see in future storyline events for V:TES?: 'Best of the Best' storyline (I made up that term): Something to do with Advanced Vampires. [Card idea for this: Two event cards (gehenna?), one to benefit merged vamps, and one to hose them. These won't be cards that be played too often, but is appropriate. Or maybe a Master benefit card similar to Week of Nightmares.] Any further comments?: Promotional idea: There should be a $5 starter deck (as opposed to the standard $10). 75-90 card deck. No more then two cards of each type (so they see a lot of cards). All commons, maybe one rare. 2-4 types of decks (bleed, vote, fight, wall, etc). If you want to make it more interesting, put it out to the VTES community to design the decks (and no I haven't thought of any yet) where it focuses on: 1) Easy of play 2) Decent deck 3) Fun A neat idea here, (but I don't know about production/printing stuff) but you can make it a 75 card deck, 15 vampires. 12 are for this particular promotion deck. The other three (one each) are for the other 3 types of promotional decks. (if so, please list): We have a private Yahoo Group for the Bangor/Orono crowd that I rule with an iron fist. How often does your group play V:TES?: There is a fairly new group that is scheduled to play every week at a local Portland game store Where do you play?: I attend tournaments in Bangor/Orono run by Lance, rarely a local gamestore playnight. How many players show up when you play?: Playnight averaged 6-8 people. How many tournaments did you run in the past year? Average attendance?: I don?t think I?ve run any, maybe 1 or 2 with my name on them for Lance. Where do you run tournaments?: I really don?t run any these days, I leave them to Lance. Are you interested in hosting a Qualfier?: Not any more. Are you interested in hosting a North American Championship?: Not any more. How often does your group travel to other groups to play V:TES?: Not really applicable, ask Lance. How far does your group travel to other groups to play V:TES?: I still go down to Boston every now and then, plus I travel 2hrs North to Bangor/Orono to play. No one else from this area travels. Does your local game store carry V:TES?: Yes. What has been your best source for new players or method for getting new players?: I haven?t done any recruiting for the last several years. What problems has your group faced in the past few years? Not really applicable. What kind of assistance would you like to see from White Wolf to help you support V:TES?: WW should get off its arse and actively advertise and promote this game. They should also do something to promote a singles market. Stores don?t want to carry VTES because there is no single market and players just buy sealed product from Potomac. You also loose potential VTES players when you continuously reprint and change rarities of cards. WW also needs to totally revamp its higher level tournaments. I hear so many discouraging comments from grassroots players regarding the qualifier and NAC system. They are totally discouraged. What kind of prize support and promotional material would you like to see for V:TES?: I?d like to see more than just a box of boosters to the winners of major events. Let?s see some $20K cash prizes. At least make it worth the $1,500 or so dollars it takes to go to the NAC. Unless the prizes get ramped up, there is no incentive for players to branch out beyond their local playgroups and local tournaments. Take a look at the attendees at the major VTES events for the last 7 years. How many names are repeats? WW has done a horrible job in bringing in new players to this game. Plus the ?old veterans? of this game have established an air of anti-change. They fear change so much it?s unbelievable. What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: A way to use allies that doesn?t suck. Better booster pack coallation (ie more vampires in each booster). What would you like to see in future storyline events for V:TES?: Something where players can use the cards they have to participate and a greater ability to shape the future of the game. Any further comments?: Here is a brief summary of my work as Prince: Prince of Bangor, ME December 2001-April 2005 Prince of Portland, ME May 2005-Present I organized, planned, conducted, and reported on 23+ tournaments (of various formats ranging from standard constructed to sealed deck to booster draft) from 02/02/02 to 08/05/06. Also I conducted numerous demo events over this four year period. Plus I scheduled and ran a weekly play night, each week, every week. This translates to over 160 playnights. I also ran pre-release events, set up a website to help organize events, and created a Yahoo Group to keep players connected. Plus I participated and judged in many high level events. Compare the above to what I do now-stay on the Prince?s List to be available for questions or sanctioning any local events for non-Princes. Plus there is also the loss of income from me and my old players. I haven?t purchased any significant product since KMW. I used to personally buy 3-6 booster boxes and 1-2 starter boxes of each new set. Plus I would run events and have playnights, which would lead to indirect sales from my players. Higher level tournament events requires better decks, which requires more cards, which results in more sales. Somebody needs to relay this last sentence to the meat heads at WWP. So in summary, WW needs to either ramp up support/resources for this game or just let it die. They need to redo their higher level tournament structure and prize support (nothing VTES does at this time even compares to other games out there that siphon off players and revenue). They should also considering hiring and paying people, like myself, to be regional coordinators/etc. to actively promote the game. But this stuff is just what I?ve been saying for years. If you?ve got any questions or want to discuss further, you can call me at 207-847-3218. This is one of the games best selling points to cross over players. What kind of prize support and promotional material would you like to see for V:TES?: The prize support is good. Play mats may be of interest or deck boxes that fit the 90 card decks. What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: Just keep up the good work. Play testing new cards has been a grate experience. What would you like to see in future storyline events for V:TES?: Any further comments?: The story line events have been a lot of fun. My only thought is cheep coming up with new ideas. What about having a deck of per determined effects that could be good or bad or NA depending on the card and the table. Example: During your untap phase the turn player draws a card from the top of a special deck and has a list of options of effects to use from the card if any apply. Then the rest of the turn continues as normal. ----------- Your Name: Scott Saint-Amour Your City/Domain: Buffalo, NY, USA How many players are in your playgroup? Money, it's really expensive to keep buying the cards for "drafts" and to keep impoving our decks. We're actually still playing with cards from the "jyhad" version of the game; nicely vintage: yes, same-old same-old: yeah. I would definately host some sort of thing, but that would be hugely expensive too, and I have no idea if I could sell enough entries to make back the money from the booster boxes I'd have to order to even announce the event. What kind of assistance would you like to see from White Wolf to help you support V:TES?: Wider distribution, it's hard to find cards, and harder to find appropriately priced cards. What kind of prize support and promotional material would you like to see for V:TES?: V:tM books/cards What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: a re-focus on the camarilla clans. There is so much room for more originality, but it seems as if WW is bored of the traditional clans- the ones the game is built on. We started playing this game because of the RPG, the traditional clans offer so much creativity, it's a shame they're only a small small piece of each of the recent expansions. What would you like to see in future storyline events for V:TES?: Any further comments?: The demo kits look nice, and I'd definately definaly order some to host a demo-day, but to pay for them before I know of anyone is seriously interested seems extreme and a potential loss of a lot of money if people don't want to show up to pay for a cards only designed to teach, and not to play. Thanks dude. I'm really interested in hosting a "demo-day". I know you guys ship out a kit with demo decks in it, but I don't know too much about it. The WW site is not overly clear on what I'd have to pay and what not. If you get a minute, if you could just let me know how much it might cost if I wanted just one demo-kit for a demo-day. Thanks. How far does your group travel to other groups to play V:TES?: To Boston = 4 hrs. We used to go the the NEQ but since it moved to Providence RI that added an hour and a half to the travel time in winter when the roads are bad and the accomodations became too expensive. Does your local game store carry V:TES?: Yes, two of them. What has been your best source for new players or method for getting new players?: Local game store and word of mouth. What problems has your group faced in the past few years? Recruting new players and keeping them interested. What kind of assistance would you like to see from White Wolf to help you support V:TES?: The Demo kits could be beefed up. Maybe better communication about Princely stuff, like what resouces are available, tips on recuiting, etc. There used to be a Princes forum which I am not sure is still around. I check the discussion group on a regular basis and it is generaly good stuff for players but there is very little there I would use as a Prince (other then LSJ ruleings). What kind of prize support and promotional material would you like to see for V:TES?: Cash prizes for major tournaments. It costs so much to travel and stay at a tournament now that I need an incentive to go. A lot of people are confident in their ability to win (rightly or not) that they will be more willing to invest in the costs of travel and lodging in the hopes of a cash prize to repay the expenses. I'm not talking about a lot of money here but $1,000 for a regional qualifier and $5,000 for the NAC is not unreasonable. I know the discussions for and against it but WW has to do something to "grow interest" in the game. I don't think there are enough new players coming into the game and you can't expect the Princes to carry the freight to recruit new players. More promo cards and prize packs for the local tournaments. What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: Expansions over the last several years, other then NoR, have been pretty good. The development team has done a very good job IMO. Possibly revisit Anarchs to beef them up. Maybe do more regional themes like LoB had an African theme. Possibly do Asian or India or Native American themes. What would you like to see in future storyline events for V:TES?: Have not thought about it. Our playgroup has an annual Maine Domain League storyline tournament over a 10 week period developed by Ben Spaulding and myself based on some ideas from the Boston playgroup. If you are interested in it I can email you the file. Our group really loves it. Every week anyone who wants to play puts $.50 in a can (tournament fee) and at the end of the 10 weeks we use the tournament fee to buy a pile of booster packs and assign them as prizes. This would probably not be sanctioned by WW but local play groups could take the idea and print up their own Domain cards and run with it. It might encourage more people to come to local play nights. Any further comments?: On a regional note. There is a possibility of a play group forming in the Portland, ME area. Ben Spaulding is not interested in doing any heavy lifting in regards to forming this group but he does know the owner of the store. Perhaps you or Ben Swainbank, if he still lives in NH which is only 1 hr from Portland, could do something to encourage this new group. Maybe run some demos or meet with the store owner to provide some support. The survey is a good idea Ben. Hope you get some good info out of it. Occasionally we will hold it at a players house or another store, but only if the usual place is over-booked and can't fit us in. > Are you interested in hosting a Qualfier?: Yes. Colorado usually hosts the North Central Regional qualifier simply because there are no other active (holding tournaments) playgroups in the region. I sent out an email last week to you and all of the registered princes in the region asking if they minded Denver hosting it again and I have had no response except from the other active Colorado prince (Jeff Goss #504). > Are you interested in hosting a North American Championship?: Yes, however I don't really see us having the player base to do so. I'd be willing to organize it though if there was interest in other playgroups traveling to Denver. > How often does your group travel to other groups to play V:TES?: We support the Longmont group whenever they have a tournament (majority of players are from the Denver area), but other than that, not very often, just because of geographical limitations (there are no other active groups within driving distance). The next closest active group is in Salt Lake City which is a 7-8 hour drive in good weather (during the summer months). I will usually fly back east for an event once or twice a year and other than that the last few years 3-4 players have traveled for the NAC. > How far does your group travel to other groups to play V:TES?: However far the NAC is. > Does your local game store carry V:TES?: Yes > What has been your best source for new players or method for getting new > players?: Word of mouth (friends of players), and other game's players asking about the game. > What problems has your group faced in the past few years? The local game store was bought out and the new management hasn't been as supportive, but it is getting better over the last few months. The playgroup has been pretty stable for the last 5-7 years though. We lose a few because they grow out of the game, families, new jobs/school, whatever, but our overall numbers have remained stable thanks to an influx of new players. We haven't really grown at all either though. > What kind of assistance would you like to see from White Wolf to help you > support V:TES?: I'd like to see Oscar or Scott come and visit (perhaps for the qualifier this year), and just give the players an opportunity to talk to them about VTES. > What kind of prize support and promotional material would you like to see > for V:TES?: I'm happy with boosters. I'm not in the game for any real material gain, however, I do think it would be nice to give the winners or finalists of large events (NAC/US Championships) vouchers or cash to cover the expense of traveling to those events. The t-shirts are ok, but with some exceptions players don't really seem to care for them. > What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: I haven't given it much thought, I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the goodies we have so far. > What would you like to see in future storyline events for V:TES?: I personally, am not a huge fan of the storyline events. Stores in this area do not carry V:TES which is a big problem for getting people interested in the game. The best soucre is trying to contact people registered at the White Wolf site. Biggest problem is that stores in this area don't carry cards or hold tournaments. I wonder if what White Wolf can do with prize support for the game. Tournament only cards would be good prize support. Also, items such as binders, the fancy card boxes, travel bags, and other merchandise that has the White Wolf or V:TES name and logo or art work on it. Most of the best players, and good friends have moved away and to date we've never really recovered. We need to find players with a commitment to go to local gameshops and local gamming conventions and help recover these lost players. For me (and I feel I speak for Goudie) we have worked SO HARD at makeing LA a premier VTES group for TEN YEARS! Time has marched on and we have seen a GREAT successful group for a LONG time. But here we stand in the valley after the peak and frankly we just can't face the hard, long, time intensive commitment that it takes refresh a group like this. I'd always hoped someone else would step up and help take the rains but no one else felt they could do what we've done. So, again, here we are being asked to raise the LA VTES group up from the ashes, but I just can't find the wind for my sails. I love the game of VTES. It's been as an important part of my life as my WIFE! I just can't bear this burdin on my own though. I will continue hosting as the players are here to play, but the enevitability (SP?) is the group could die as soon as the end of this year and there is nothing, I feel, I can do. Sad but true. Probably more Info than you we're looking for. But the truth is it's ALWAYS been hard getting players in LA and most gameing circles think VTES was dead a LONG time ago and have move on to "Whats New". Our qualifier in Providence may count as "travel" for some, as it was a longer haul for our NH players and some people took up hotel rooms for the weekend. In past years, I've led a couple of qualifier road trips per year, plus we travel to the NAC. In 2007, the NY and DC qualifiers conflicted with other stuff, and no other players stood up to lead those trips. In 2008, the qualifier rules have changed to make "bullies" out of pre-qualified players, so I've been strongly discouraged _not_ to go to other qualifiers and sadly, my guess is that those road trips will fail to happen again due to lack of leadership and/or resources. > How far does your group travel to other groups to play V:TES?: Individually, as far as Eastern Europe. Princes could update their information periodically (contact info, play location, upcoming events, etc.) I know that most of that info is available already on the White Wolf website, but my idea centralizes that information, and is wicked cool. > What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: Nothing specific. Time and money What kind of assistance would you like to see from White Wolf to help you support V:TES?: I think an aggressive marketing campaign would help. Most people I encounter are interested in the game but only my local store carries VTES and they have a crappy selection. It is hard to keep people’s interest when Magic and Yu Gi Oh and WOW are everywhere and VTES isn’t. Stores just don’t seem to even know what I am asking for when I ask for VTES. What kind of prize support and promotional material would you like to see for V:TES?: I love what you are currently doing What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: I would love to see the Hunter experiment expanded upon as well as seeing Mage, Changeling, Werewolf and Wraith based expansions with the aforementioned as crypt characters. I think the game is going to have to expand somehow, otherwise it is going to repeat itself or it is going to make cards that obsolete past cards (ie a new Freak Drive that is clearly superior). I'm occasionally willing to fly across the country for events, but haven't been able to do that as much lately. Does your local game store carry V:TES?: Yes (limited selection though). Usually everyone just orders on-line with All Star or Potomac though. What has been your best source for new players or method for getting new players?: I've tried various methods throughout the years. Usually advertising and letting them come to us is the best method rather than trying to push VTES on to them. What problems has your group faced in the past few years? Attracting new players. Also, the constant influx of new promos has been frustrating for many of the older players. What kind of assistance would you like to see from White Wolf to help you support V:TES?: More efforts (events, kits) designed to attract new players. More outreach programs. What kind of prize support and promotional material would you like to see for V:TES?: Things are fine. What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: Vampire-only (no Imbued/Mages/Werewolves stuff). For me, PLAY BALANCE is more key than the specific theme. I've been disturbed by the steady power creep in the last few expansions. What would you like to see in future storyline events for V:TES?: More storyline events! It's been forever since the last one. And perhaps ones designed so the same clans (the "popular" ones) don't always win them. Let the crappier clans win! People who don't know anything about the game, just assume or 'heard from a friend' that the game is impossibly hard and/or long. That as we all know, is completely wrong! If we can change that misperception than I really think the game can easily (for my area at least) double my player base. -------- > Your Name: Kevin Foster > Your City/Domain: Bloomington, Indiana > How many players are in your playgroup? Something that makes VTES seem like a game that is alive. Maybe a news section that is updated regularly with reports from major tournaments, opinion articles and such. The newsgroup is good for this sort of thing, but it's a bit antiquated, and I'm not sure that the new generation of player is going to find much use in USENET. > What kind of prize support and promotional material would you like to see > for V:TES?: I would like to see cards with alternate art used as promos only. Maybe something for Govern or Deflection? Honestly, I'd rather that WW use its promotional dollars for attracting new players rather than rewarding old ones. I think VTES has a solid grip on its player base - the problem is making sure there are new ones too. > What would you like to see in future expansions for V:TES?: I'd like to see a slowing of new mechanics being introduced into the game. At some point, the game will be too complicated for its own good, and i don't think a lack of new mechanics would cause old players to get bored with the game, but it might cause new players to get too frustrated with it. Maybe the game has already reached that point. > What would you like to see in future storyline events for V:TES?: More storylines in general.
