update:
Well, the repairs are finally done.
I got the package from UPS today, and installed the new cards in
the firewall. Packet loss dropped from 6% to 0% instantly, and
all of the associated problems were resolved.
While I was at it, I also switched the internal network interface to
full-duplex mode, and put a 100 megabit, full duplex card in the web server.
Update:
Well, everything is flakey again.
I keep getting 4%-8% packet loss to the internal side of the firewall.
The exterior side remain rock solid at 0% packet loss.
I think the internal network interface has died - I ordered a couple
of new ethernet cards - hopefully this should be a quick fix when they get here.
Previous comment:
The various bizarre network problems happening at house.ofdoom.com
have been resolved. I just finished switching the internal network from the
old 10 base 2 system which we`ve used for years, to a new 10/100 base T system.
Recently there was a series of bizarre network problems such as:
Computers only seeing each other if the network was unterminated
Machine 24 and machine 8 can both see machine 10, but not each other.
Machine 8 and 24 were closer to each other than to 10.
and many other problems...
Here is the new 10 base T festooned look of the main server:
Soon I'll have to actually replace the panels, and clean up the cables:
